How to Read a CBG Certificate of Analysis (COA): A Buyer's Guide
Every serious hemp company tells you to “check the COA.” Far fewer explain how to actually read one — which numbers matter, what the abbreviations mean, and which details separate a real lab report from set dressing. This is the panel-by-panel walkthrough, using the same things we look for when we review our own isolate’s report from KCA Labs. Ten minutes here and no spec sheet in this industry will intimidate you again.
What a COA is — and what it isn’t
A Certificate of Analysis is a report from an analytical laboratory stating what a specific batch of product actually contains. For a CBG product, it answers three questions: how much CBG is really in there, how much THC is in there, and whether anything harmful came along for the ride. What a COA is not: a certification of quality, an endorsement, or a guarantee about any other batch. It describes one lot of material at one point in time — which is exactly why the batch number matters so much.
First check: who ran the test
Before reading a single number, look at whose name is on the report. It should be an independent, accredited laboratory — ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation is the standard for testing labs — not the seller’s own bench. Our isolate is tested by KCA Labs, an accredited cannabinoid testing laboratory; the report number and QR code on the COA let you pull the same report from the lab’s own system rather than trusting our copy of it. In-house numbers can be honest, but they are claims, not verification. If the lab has no verifiable existence outside the seller’s PDF, stop there.
Panel 1: Cannabinoid potency
The potency panel lists each cannabinoid measured and its concentration, usually in both percent and mg/g. On a CBG isolate report you want to see the headline number stated plainly — ours reads 99.5% cannabigerol — with the remaining fraction accounted for by minor, named compounds or simply nothing detected. Three details to check:
The units. 99.5% purity means 995 mg of CBG per gram. For a finished liquid product, potency is usually mg/mL — our Nano Micelle CBG, for instance, tests at 20 mg/mL. Confirm the units on the COA match the units on the label.
The total. Cannabinoid percentages cannot add to more than 100. Reports showing 101%+ “total cannabinoids” are a known trick of the low end of this industry — walk away.
The claim match. The COA number should meet or beat the label number. “99%+ pure” on the label with 96.8% on the report is a mismatch, not a rounding error. The deeper story on how purity numbers get inflated is in CBG Isolate Purity: What 99.5% Means.
Panel 2: The THC panel — read every line
THC isn’t one line item; it’s a family. A complete report tests Δ9-THC, Δ8-THC, and THCA (the acid form that converts to Δ9-THC with heat), and ideally the rarer variants too. On our isolate’s KCA Labs report, every one of them reads ND — non-detect: nothing found above the lab’s detection limit.
Why the full panel matters: a product can pass the federal 0.3% Δ9-THC definition of hemp while still carrying meaningful THCA or Δ8. And the rules are tightening — Kansas already requires effectively 0.00% THC for products sold in-state, and the federal rule taking effect November 12, 2026 caps total THC at 0.4 mg per container (the subject of our 2026 federal hemp rule guide). A THC panel that only lists Δ9 is answering last decade’s question. For anyone drug-tested, employed in a zero-tolerance role, or buying for pets, ND-across-the-board is the line to insist on.
Panel 3: Contaminants — the panels people skip
Potency sells the product; the contaminant panels protect you. A thorough COA for an ingredient-grade product includes some or all of:
Residual solvents. Extraction and refinement use solvents; the finished product shouldn’t retain them beyond trace limits. The report lists each solvent with a pass/fail against a published limit.
Heavy metals. Hemp is a bioaccumulator — it pulls metals like lead, arsenic, cadmium, and mercury out of soil, which is a real reason farm sourcing matters. Each metal should show below its action limit.
Pesticides, microbials, mycotoxins. Screens for spray residues, mold, and bacterial contamination — most critical for flower and full-spectrum products, still worth seeing on any finished good.
Not every COA carries every panel on every lot, and reputable suppliers will tell you their testing cadence for each. What you should never accept is a supplier who treats the question as unreasonable.
The metadata: small print, most of the fraud
Most COA problems live in the header, not the chemistry. Check four things: the batch/lot number matches the product in your hand; the test date is recent enough to describe current production; the sample description matches what you bought (a distillate COA attached to an isolate listing is a real thing that happens); and the report is verifiable at the lab via QR code or report-number lookup. A brand that batch-matches its COAs — every jar traceable to its own report — is showing you its supply chain. A brand with one undated, unnumbered COA for the whole catalog is showing you a prop.

What’s a red flag on a CBG COA?
The big ones: no batch number, a report older than a year, potency-only reports with no THC or contaminant panels, a total cannabinoid figure over 100%, a lab nobody can verify, and any mismatch between the COA and the label.
Does a COA expire?
The report itself doesn’t expire, but it only describes the batch it was drawn from. A current product should ship with a COA from its own production run, not a report recycled from a batch made a year earlier.
