Inside a Kansas Hemp Farm: From Seed to Final Product

“Farm to bottle” is printed on a lot of hemp packaging by companies that have never planted a seed. This post is the literal version: what actually happens, step by step, between putting a high-CBG hemp seed in Kansas ground and sealing a jar of 99.5% pure CBG isolate. It’s the process our family runs every season in the Kaw Valley — the Kansas River valley around Lawrence — and knowing how it works will make you a sharper judge of anyone’s hemp, including ours.

Why the farm matters at all

Most hemp brands don’t farm. They buy extract from brokers, who bought biomass from farms the brand has never seen, and the paper trail gets thinner at every hand-off. That supply chain can work, but when something’s off — a heavy-metal reading, a pesticide residue, a purity number that doesn’t match the label — nobody in it can tell you which field the problem came from.

A vertically integrated operation is the opposite arrangement: the same people control genetics, planting, harvest, extraction, refinement, and testing. Not because each step is exotic, but because owning all of them means one unbroken chain of custody from a specific field to the jar in your hand. That’s the entire argument for buying single-source, and it’s why we walk through the whole chain below.

Step 1: Genetics — the decision that happens before spring

Everything downstream is capped by the seed. Hemp cultivars are bred for a dominant cannabinoid, and CBG-dominant genetics are a different, newer branch than the CBD varieties most farms plant. In a CBG cultivar, the plant’s enzymatic pathway is interrupted so that cannabigerol — the precursor molecule the plant would normally convert onward into other cannabinoids — accumulates instead of being consumed. Choosing CBG genetics is also choosing a harder farming problem: a narrower harvest window and less industry knowledge to lean on, because far fewer farms grow it. That difficulty is the moat. It’s why real CBG specialists are rare and why we committed to the molecule rather than adding it as a line extension.

Step 2: Planting and the growing season

Hemp goes into Kansas ground in late spring, once soil temperatures hold steady. The Kaw Valley’s river-bottom soil and long, hot summers suit hemp — the same conditions that made this valley farm country a century before anyone wrote “hemp-derived cannabinoid” on a label. Through the season the work looks like farming anywhere: irrigation management, scouting for pests and mold pressure, and walking the rows. What’s different for a licensed hemp farm is the regulatory layer on top — the crop is registered with the state, and compliance sampling verifies the plants stay within the legal THC limit while they mature.

Step 3: Harvest — timed by lab results, not the calendar

For a CBG crop, timing is the whole game. Cannabinoid content climbs as flowers mature, and the crop needs to come down at peak CBG — wait too long and the plant’s chemistry keeps moving; harvest early and you leave potency in the field. As maturity approaches we sample and test repeatedly, and the numbers, not the date, make the call. After cutting, the harvest is dried and cured under controlled airflow and humidity — unglamorous, decisive work: rushed drying degrades cannabinoids, and sloppy curing invites mold that no downstream step can fully undo.

Step 4: Extraction — flower becomes crude extract

Extraction pulls the cannabinoids out of the dried plant material with a solvent, then removes the solvent, leaving a dark, tar-like crude extract that carries the CBG along with waxes, chlorophyll, and plant fats. Crude is an intermediate — nobody should be selling it as a finished product. The refinement chain that follows is what separates an ingredient-grade product from a shortcut.

Step 5: Refinement — crude becomes 99.5% isolate

Refinement happens in stages. Winterization chills the crude in solvent so fats and waxes solidify and can be filtered out. Distillation separates the cannabinoid fraction from remaining plant compounds. Then isolation: the CBG is purified and crystallized until what remains is a fine white powder testing at 99.5% cannabigerol — the isolate we sell, and the input for everything else we make, including the water-soluble Nano Micelle CBG built from it. Each stage strips something away, and each stage is also a checkpoint — material that doesn’t meet spec doesn’t move forward. By the isolate stage, the acceptable THC content is simple: none detected.

Step 6: Testing — the step that makes the rest provable

Everything above is our word. Third-party testing is what turns it into evidence. Finished lots go to an independent, accredited laboratory (our current isolate COA is from KCA Labs) for potency, a full THC panel, and contaminant screens. You don’t need to memorize our process — you need to use it as a checklist for anyone’s. Ask where the hemp was grown. Ask who did the extraction. Ask for the COA, and check that the lab is independent. A brand that controls its chain can answer in a sentence; a brand that can’t will answer with adjectives.
