Why Water-Soluble CBG Outperforms Oil-Based Cannabinoids
Most cannabinoid products started life as oils. CBG, CBD, and their relatives are fat-soluble in their natural form, so oil is the simplest carrier — dissolve the extract in MCT or coconut oil, bottle it, sell it. It works, and for sublingual use it works well. But the market has been shifting for a specific, physical reason: water-soluble cannabinoid formats are growing faster than any other delivery format in the category, and the reasons hold up under a microscope and in a peer-reviewed lab.
This post walks through what actually changes when you move from an oil-based cannabinoid to a water-soluble one — in the body, in a beverage, and on a spec sheet — and where the honest limits of that advantage are. The starting point: CBG is oily by default
CBG, like most cannabinoids, is hydrophobic. Its molecular structure — dominated by carbon and hydrogen — repels water and associates with fats. Drop raw cannabinoid oil into a glass of water and it does what oil always does: minimizes contact with the water by pulling into a single floating droplet. That isn't a defect in CBG. It's basic physical chemistry, and it's shared by fat-soluble vitamins and a large fraction of pharmaceutical actives.
That single fact — hydrophobic by default — creates four practical problems for anyone taking or formulating with an oil-based cannabinoid.
Problem 1: Oil is absorbed slowly and incompletely
When you swallow an oil-based cannabinoid, your body can't use it until it processes the oil. The dose moves through the stomach, gets emulsified by bile acids, and is absorbed over a relatively long timeline — much of it routed through the lymphatic system and the liver before it reaches general circulation. Along that path, a large share of the cannabinoid is broken down before it ever does anything. This is called first-pass metabolism, and for cannabinoids it is substantial.
The numbers are worth knowing. A 2024 review in Pharmaceuticals puts the estimated oral bioavailability of CBD — using the FDA-approved product Epidiolex as the benchmark — at roughly 6–14%, and attributes the loss to poor water solubility combined with extensive hepatic first-pass metabolism, noting that on the order of 70–75% of an oral CBD dose is metabolized before reaching systemic circulation. Other pharmacokinetic work reports cannabinoid oral bioavailability anywhere from about 4% to 20%, with wide person-to-person variation and a strong food effect. However you slice it, most of an oral oil dose is lost.
Water-soluble CBG changes the arithmetic. The cannabinoid is pre-packaged into water-compatible nano-particles, so there's no oil phase for the gut to break down first. A 2025 crossover study in the Journal of Cannabis Research compared a self-nanoemulsifying cannabinoid powder against a commercial oil-based formulation in the same participants and reported roughly 2.3-fold higher relative bioavailability for CBD (and about 2.9-fold for THC), with peak blood concentrations reached far sooner — on the order of one hour versus about four and a half hours for the oil drops. Faster in, and more of the dose actually usable.
A note on honesty, because it matters in this category: those figures come from third-party research on nano-emulsified cannabinoids in general, not from a head-to-head study of our specific product. We haven't run our own comparative pharmacokinetic trial, and we won't quote a bioavailability multiplier for Kaw Valley Nano Micelle CBG that we haven't measured. Problem 2: Oil won't mix into a drink
If you've ever stirred a CBG tincture into coffee, you've watched this happen. The oil floats, pools at the edges, and refuses to integrate. You drink the coffee and a good part of the dose is left as a slick on the cup. Beyond being unpleasant, it makes dosing inconsistent — early sips carry little, the last mouthful carries a lot.

Problem 3: Oil has an oily mouthfeel
The simplest reason a lot of people quietly abandon oil tinctures: they taste oily. The carrier coats the mouth and leaves a residue. Some don't mind it; others find it enough to skip the product entirely. Water-based formulations have no oily mouthfeel because there's no oil involved — a true nano-emulsion blended into a flavored beverage is close to undetectable.
Problem 4: Oil is less stable in cold and hot drinks
Temperature swings make the oil-and-water separation worse. Cold thickens the oil and encourages it to cluster into larger droplets; heat can drive its own separation. A properly engineered water-soluble nano-formulation holds up across the normal beverage temperature range, hot or cold, because the particles are small and thermodynamically stable rather than a coarse suspension waiting to break.
How water-soluble CBG actually works
Water-soluble CBG is made by emulsifying the cannabinoid into nano-scale particles built around a micelle structure. Each CBG molecule is wrapped in a surfactant with a water-loving outer layer and a fat-loving core, producing a particle that moves through water as if it were dissolved. The single most important quality signal is particle size. The same label can describe very different things: a 35-nanometer product and a 300-nanometer product can both say "water-soluble," and they will not behave the same way. Premium formulations sit in roughly the 20–50 nanometer range, which is small enough to stay optically clear and thermodynamically stable. Lower-quality "water-soluble" products lean on coarser emulsifiers that produce particles in the 200–400 nanometer range — visibly cloudier, prone to settling, and slower to absorb. Smaller, tighter particles mean better dispersion, more consistent dosing, and a more stable suspension over shelf life.

When oil-based still makes sense
Water-soluble has clear structural advantages, but oil isn't obsolete, and pretending otherwise would be overselling. A few cases where an oil format is the right call:
Sublingual users who want a slower, longer arc. Held under the tongue, oil delivers a gradual dosing curve some people prefer.
Topicals. Skin and oil get along, so balms, salves, and creams are naturally oil-based.
Cooking with fat. A recipe already built on oil or butter will carry an oil-based cannabinoid with no extra work.
Cost. Oil-based CBG is generally cheaper to produce, which can make it cheaper to buy.
The right format follows the use case. For anything that ends up in a glass, water-soluble wins on dispersion and consistency; for anything oil-based to begin with, an oil carrier is simpler.
What this means for formulators
For a beverage or edible developer, the format question is really a processing question. An oil phase has to be broken and held in suspension, and it can separate during fill, pasteurization, or cold storage — the neck-ring and haze problems every drink maker knows. A true nano-emulsion goes into a water-based matrix clear and stays there, drops in at essentially any production stage, and doesn't rely on an oil phase that can crash. Finished-product compliance and stability are always the manufacturer's responsibility to validate in their own matrix — pH, processing temperature, and preservation systems all matter — but the starting ingredient behaves predictably. Does water-soluble CBG cost more than oil?
Usually, yes — the manufacturing process is more involved. The trade-off is more efficient absorption, so you may use less per serving.
Will water-soluble CBG cloud my drink?
A true nano-emulsion in the 35–50 nm range does not meaningfully cloud water. Coarser "water-soluble" products can, which is often the tell that the particles are far larger than the label implies.
Can I take water-soluble CBG sublingually?
Yes. The water-soluble format absorbs well through oral tissue and suits sublingual use, even though its main advantage shows up in beverages.

The shift toward water-soluble cannabinoids isn't a fad or a marketing repaint. It addresses measurable problems with the oil format — slow and incomplete absorption, poor mixing, oily mouthfeel, and temperature instability — that have frustrated consumers and formulators for years.
